The Department of Immigration & Citizenship hosts a free service to check the work right of non-Australian citizens.
Entitled VEVO or Visa Entitlement Verification, the system allows you to login to a centralised database to validate the status of an individual’s rights to work in Australia.
Whilst most non-Australian citizens will have the right to work while they are living in Australia, there may be conditions on their work arrangements, and there is a legal mandatory requirement to check and manage these rights and any changes to their status.
There is recent Australian Sanctions that have been passed to educate, but to also penalise organisations and individuals who are serial offenders.
This means that the Department will exercise their rights to conduct spot audits, so you need to be absolutely sure that the process and procedures that you adopt are efficient and auditable – and preferably transparent if you are a larger company with multiple offices.
The Department recognised that they needed to make it easy for organisations to conduct and manage this requirement and as a key industry employment specialist WorkPro was selected by the Department to exclusively pilot a commercial model, integrating directly with the Department’s database to instantly validate work rights checks.
WorkPro has worked with the Department over two years, to introduce the pilot program to enable an organisation to instantly check an individual’s work rights.
At the time of design and development, and as an industry partner who works closely with commercial entities, we recognised the process needed more than just an initial check. So in combination with the provision to instantly check an individual’s work rights, we provide an official verification certificate, the option to set a re-check date and an automated email reminder to re-check the visa on a particular date.
Now what I found amusing when I conducted market research is that there are companies who are (a) advertising an integrated, instant service, which simply isn’t true, and (b) is charging for such a service. VEVO is a FREE service, and so is WorkPro’s – it always will be!
Your employee enters their citizenship during the WorkPro registration process. If they are a non-Australian citizen, certain information is entered and securely stored in their profile, ready for you to validate when and if you need to (not every potential employee will work for you)!
If you need to check the person’s work rights, and remembering it’s a legal requirement, you can simply login to WorkPro, and with one click, validate their information against the VEVO database, with an instant result.
All results are stored forever, so you don’t need to save the certificate if you don’t want to, and all checks are archived after 90 days to make it easier for you to manage (searchable as a feature), but the point is, the crucial evidence is there forever, to refer to for audit purposes.
Do not pay for a service that others advertise – it is, and should be, absolutely free, as we committed to the Department as part of our arrangement.
