Hello, and welcome to the WorkPro blog. Today we’re continuing our series on what Australia’s revised Work Health and Safety law means for independent contractors and those who hire them.
In our last post, we noted that the legislation clearly states both independent contractors and their host organisations share responsibilities for work health and safety.
So, if your company hires contractors, how can you make it easier to uphold these obligations?
It’s all about being diligent and having systems in place to monitor and manage processes. Keeping clear documentation is a must.
When you choose contractors, look into their health and safety record and select parties with the right expertise and licenses. Where applicable, examine their documentation for competencies and safe work method statements.
Then, conduct health and safety training that’s easy to understand and clear on responsibilities. Monitor ongoing work activities to ensure your site stays compliant.
Finally, strong communication and cooperation will help keep all parties focussed on important objectives.
