Bullying – Concern for consistent national statistics

Workplace Bullying A national survey has found that levels of bullying and discrimination in the workplace have remained at similar levels for the last five years despite increased government and community focus. The survey of over 6,500 individuals, conducted by employee screening and induction specialist WorkPro, found that one in four (25%) people have been bullied or discriminated against in the last two years. These results mirror the findings of the survey in 2008, when the same proportion said they had been bullied or discriminated against in the previous two years. This suggests there has been little change in bullying and discriminatory behavior in Australian workplaces over the last five years in spite of growing work being undertaken on the issue by Safe Work Australia and State and Territory governments. Recently the federal government responded to the house of representatives inquiry into workplace bullying. Of the 23 recommendations made in the report, 19 were supported. One of the key recommendations for change was the need to adopt a national definition for Bullying. Currently there is not one standard definition across the States, making it difficult to monitor, report and legislate. Bullying can have significant human and financial costs to business:

  • Reduced efficiency, productivity and profitability
  • Increased absenteeism and staff turnover
  • The breakdown of teams and individual relationships
  • Poor morale and emission of worker loyalty and commitment
  • Poor worker health
  • Increased costs associated with workers’ compensation claims or defending claims
