Cloud computing making remote work easier

Cloud computing is one of the most talked-about business trends, with many people espousing its benefits. Whether all of the possible advantages that come with cloud computing are realised, working remotely is one area which is already demonstrating the benefits of cloud computing.

Many Australian firms are already turning to cloud computing to drive new growth in their business and support their employees. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for example, estimates that 44 per cent of SMEs are currently using cloud technologies to improve their internal management, with larger firms achieving even higher percentages.

For remote workers, cloud computing makes it is easier to access company resources, without being bound to a specific location. By working in sync with mobile devices, it is also possible for employees to telecommute from just about anywhere and collaborate on joint projects.

This makes it easier for companies with a geographically dispersed workforce to offer employees a greater level of flexibility whilst not compromising on productivity and connectivity.

At the same time, Australian workers are increasingly supporting the possibilities remote working offers. A recent study from Intel found that 46 per cent of workers are interested in telecommuting to work rather than traveling into the office every day.

The same study reported that, in the UK, the number of self-employed workers has gone up 37 per cent since 2000, as people begin to work as remote freelancers utilising cloud technologies, rather than in an office environment.

As cloud computing becomes more prevalent in Australia, it is likely that more workers will be balancing working remotely with being office bound.

To help employers implement safe work practices for telecommuting workers, WorkPro has released a free e-book on the topic. This book contains a range of helpful information, hints and advice which can help employers. This e-book also contains checklists to build a robust system of work to cater to workplace health and safety obligations.
