Deloitte: Overwhelmed workers need attention from management

Workers in Australia face increasingly stressful working conditions. What's more, it is getting difficult for companies to address these challenges and keep workers engaged.

A recent survey from Deloitte has reinforced this point, finding that companies are struggling to keep on top of workplace stress and risk losing the edge over their competition as a result. 

In fact, slightly more than a third (34 per cent) of respondents are concerned about the levels of stress that their employees are feeling, ranking it in their top five concerns. In particular, company executives are worrying about the number of overwhelmed employees whose productivity is dropping as a result of increased workplace stress.

At the same time, only 10 per cent of those surveyed reported that they have effective processes in place to effectively dealing with these trends.

The numbers became even worse when looking at the different ways companies are engaging with their staff. When asked how well companies are pursuing an active employee management system, only 6 per cent reported their efforts as excellent. 

At the other end of the scale, a majority (57 per cent) of those surveyed reported that their techniques for managing employee stress are weak. 

David Brown, Deloitte Australia's Human Capital Leader, suggested that HR departments are in a good position to reduce stress in the workplace.

"HR departments have an opportunity to lead efforts to manage pervasive communications practices that tend to overwhelm employees, simplify the work environment, create more flexible work standards, and teach managers and workers how to prioritise workloads," said Mr Brown.
