EPISODE 004 – Talking the same language when it comes to Contractors

In this podcast Luke speaks with the CEO of ITCRA Julie Mills who discusses the recent ‘Defining the Future’ Forums which took place in Melbourne and Sydney.

Julie discusses why the separation of independent contracting from vulnerable workers is important and why the need for a robust conversation on the review of legislative and regulatory language was long overdue.

0.40-Background about where the forums initiated from

1.10-The challenge of distinguishing between the different forms of contracting

2.30-The changing nature of work has led to a growing number of different ways that this type of work is being called

3.20-The first forum in Melbourne came up with no less than 48 descriptors, which were then reduced to 5.

Never before in her 30 years heading up Industry Associations has Julie witnessed as much activity and discussion as she did at that first forum.

5.35-The standout language that was flagged as a risk and that they had to fight hard to remove was ‘PAYG Contractor’

8.00-Another conversation was needed now to define these 5 descriptors and they now had to consider the International Landscape

8.46-The second forum in Sydney was over-subscribed. The legal/insurance implications were discussed.

10.10-“A Contractor for a Cleaning Company earning $35/hr cannot be expected to be treated the same way as a   Contractors in a ICT Company earning $125/hr – the parameters are too broad”

11.40-Employees – Takin it out where it didn’t belong. “Contractors do not see themselves as Employees”

12.40-“Someone inferred that Recruiters were trying to avoid their responsibilities – far from it!!”

13.07-Where do entitlements sit?

14.30-Services being sought by Contractors. They want to be Independent but do not want to perform the day to day activities/responsibilities so they engage the services of a Contractor Payroll Co for example

* Template documents = consistency
* Develop Position Statements
* Determine the value of the Sector
* Take some leadership in a Global sense
