Many companies are looking for new opportunities to create a flexible working environment, as a way to boost employee engagement and productivity.
In fact, a study from the University of Melbourne* has found that flexible workers are more productive than those who spend all day in the office. This makes it even more important for businesses to consider ways to reduce these risks.
So how can companies create a flexible working environment that staff take seriously?
The first step is to look at the systems your business has in place and establish how teleworking might be developed into these processes. Some work will not be able to be done outside of the office, while some company systems will not be designed to work outside of a head office.
Working out where and how teleworking can be incorporated into your business will be the first step towards supporting remote employees.
While addressing the physical barriers that staff face is a good starting point, companies will need to look at the cultural shift that also occurs around remote workers. For example, staff are likely to need additional health and safety training if they are going to work outside of the office.
Managers will also need to be taken into consideration, as team leaders will often face a new range of responsibilities when the staff they manage are not in the same building as them.
Finally, companies need to monitor the ongoing success of their teleworking solutions. If companies are unable to realise the benefits that come with a flexible workforce, it might be worth reviewing or scaling back this option until companies find the right balance for their operations.
