WorkPro and AEN: preparing the next generation to put safety first at work

WorkPro and Apprentice Employment Network NSW & ACT announced a new partnership last week, aimed at preparing the next generation of apprentices and trainees with practical industry-standard safety training to keep them safe from the moment they enter the workforce.

Young people, aged 15-24, have one of the highest work-related injury rates of any age group (ABS, 2018-18), primarily due to their lack of workplace experience, life experience and brain development. On this basis, they do need more support and training to develop an awareness of safety and how to protect themselves and their colleagues on site.

The Apprentice Employment Network’s members consist of Group Training Organisations (GTO’s) that deliver programs to young people who are engaging in training to begin new careers in a range of industries. As part of their curriculum, many undertake apprenticeships and traineeships where they are placed in a business or organisation (known as ‘Host company’) to learn on the job.

In these arrangements, there is a shared responsibility by law for the GTO and Host company to ensure safety training, instruction and information is delivered to workers when they start on a site. Both parties must then work together by consulting, co-operating and co-ordinating health and safety activities and processes to look after workers placed in roles.

The new partnership creates consistent safety learning delivery across the network of AEN member organisations and associated companies. Apprentices and trainees who begin their practical training on-site will be inducted with a purpose-built Trainee and Apprentice Safety module, as well as other job-specific learning modules that address the inherent risks of performing their new role.

The WorkPro platform will allow these employers to deliver, track and manage all of their work health and safety training online – so all activities are recorded and parties can be confident that compliance, industry requirements and duty of care are being met thanks to an automated system they can trust.

WorkPro: standardising safety training to meet industry compliance

WorkPro’s platform for delivering online safety inductions will standardise service delivery for AEN member organisations and provide a range of benefits for everyone involved in the network: GTO’s, Host companies and apprentices and trainees.

For GTO’s and Hosts, this means:

  • Their workers receive practical, purpose-built work health and safety training with WorkPro’s Apprentices and Trainees learning module and 40+ others
  • Learning content that updates automatically to meet current industry requirements, ensuring duty of care is always met

  • Faster onboarding with inductions that can be completed online, before workers arrive on site
  • Portable training profiles so workers can move between employers and begin instantly
  • An online dashboard and digital audit trail to prove compliance anywhere, anytime

As a result, apprentices and trainees that complete a training program with AEN member organisations will start work with a good awareness of general and job-specific safety.

WorkPro’s new Apprentices and Trainees module

WorkPro’s new Trainee & Apprenticeship module prepares these young workers with critical safety knowledge and information so they can begin work with confidence. The module includes key work health and safety topics, including:

  • Who is responsible for your health and safety at work?
  • Your rights and responsibilities as a worker
  • Common risks and hazards
  • Reporting hazards and incidents
  • What to do if you are injured at work

This eLearning module can be delivered online via the WorkPro platform stand-alone, or as part of a job package with other modules like Manufacturing Safety, General Trades, Construction Safety, Hazardous Manual Tasks, Working Alone, Safety in Transport and Logistics and Safety in Nursing.

Learning can be completed from any device on the worker’s own time. Employers can create job packages that also include other key employment tasks like background checks and automated document requests for skill accreditations, providing a range of possibilities for organisations to streamline the wider onboarding process used across their full workforce.

Making safety inductions simple for everyone

Jason Sultana from Apprentice Employment Network NSW & ACT is excited about what the partnership with WorkPro can do to standardise training delivery and prioritise industry-standard safety – for apprentices and trainees, GTO’s in the network, and host employers where young workers are learning their new craft.

“WorkPro provides a practical option for our network – one that can save them money and time, as well as address their needs,” Mr Sultana said.

“Group Training Organisations in the past didn’t have a standard way to induct apprentices and trainees. WorkPro’s online eLearning platform now gives them a consistent and cost-effective solution for safety inductions that is also flexible.”

“The growing scope of modules they offer covers most industries that our member organisations work in, which can provide efficiencies with other parts of their business models too.”

“For apprentices, it also means consistency in terms of their experience with work health and safety training. This provides them with confidence entering the worksite, knowing their induction meets modern industry standards and is applicable to their new role.”

WorkPro Founder, Tania Evans, says this is just another step towards creating a healthier, safer workplace for everyone.

“Apprentices and trainees are just starting out their professional journeys, and they need to be prepared and feeling good about entering the workforce. We couldn’t be happier to support AEN to give the new generation of workers the right tools to have a long, happy, and safe career ahead.”
