This module helps disability support workers understand how infections can spread during everyday support activities and the practical steps they can take to reduce transmission. From hand hygiene and PPE to cleaning, waste management and responding to illness or exposure, workers learn how to apply infection prevention practices safely and respectfully across a range of NDIS support settings.
The module provides general awareness and should be used alongside provider policies and procedures, participant-specific support plans, clinical advice and relevant public health requirements.
Understanding Infection Risks:
Learn how microorganisms spread between people, surfaces, equipment and activities, and how breaking the chain of infection can help reduce transmission.
Applying Standard Precautions:
Understand how to assess infection risks before a task and apply appropriate controls, including hand and respiratory hygiene, PPE and safe handling practices.
Managing Cleaning, Waste and Exposure Risks:
Build awareness of safe environmental cleaning, disinfection, waste and sharps management, spill response and the steps to follow after exposure to potentially infectious material.
Recognising and Responding to Illness: Learn to recognise changes that may indicate illness or infection, follow escalation procedures and take appropriate action when a participant or worker becomes unwell.
Supporting Safe, Person-Centred Care:
Understand how infection prevention can be applied while respecting each participant’s dignity, privacy, communication needs, preferences and individual support arrangements.
